When my sister and I moved to NYC back in the day, let’s just say money was a weeeeee bit tight. I was swimming in debt from grad school and my sister didn’t even have a job lined up, so we began life in our 425-square-foot apartment believing that the concrete jungle really was where dreams were made of!
Needless to say, we had zero discretionary income and learned quickly how to be both wise and strategic with our money. But once a week on Fridays we allowed ourselves a treat, which usually meant each of us buying a $10 bottle of Prosecco from the corner wine shop, which we drank together over the weekend. But once in a while we got REALLY crazy and splurged on Blueberry Mojitos at Vero, an Upper East Side neighborhood spot, which offered them for $9 during Happy Hour. I remember vividly how excited we used to get on those particular Fridays and how absolutely delicious those drinks tasted. And how much fun the two of us had together trying to make it in the big city! It’s funny because when I think back on my life, some of my very best memories are from times when I struggled the very most.
So this Big City Blueberry Mojito is an ode to my sister, Valerie, our early days in NYC, and to the priceless memories we made together at 1431 York Avenue!
