Any pomegranate lovers in the house?
I most definitely am. And with pomegranate season coming to an end, I’m trying to get the most out of this gorgeous fruit before it disappears again for the next 10 months!
Which of course includes cocktails.
Recently I whipped up some Pomegranate Cosmos, which led my mom and I down a pomegranate rabbit hole. We ended up reading all about the fruit, where it comes from, what flavors it works best with, etc., and then spent an entire afternoon mixing things together to see what kind of pom concoctions we could come up with. And let me just tell you, it’s not as easy as you might think!
Yes, you can sub it for cranberry in certain drinks, but don’t make the mistake of thinking they are interchangeable. Because they aren’t. Particularly in cocktails. Pomegranates have a distinct flavor, but it’s quite mild compared to most fruit and therefore has to be treated delicately so it doesn’t get overpowered by other flavors. And I know because 95% of what I tried to create with it was a giant flop!
But before getting into any of my own concoctions, I thought I’d share the drink that (unexpectedly) started the “Albanese Pomegranate Cocktail Challenge!” (Feel free to join. 😁) Here you have a simple Pomegranate Cosmopolitan, this recipe reflecting my penchant for a more tart than sweet cocktail. And I don’t care whether it’s in vogue or not, I always have and always will love a well-mixed Cosmo!
