Add some cheer to a grey winter day with this recipe for a Saturn cocktail and learn a bit of the history behind this classic drink.

Winter has officially struck Georgia and I miss the beach.

And since I can’t be sipping a cocktail while lazily lounging in my beach chair, soaking up some rays, I’m bringing the island to me by way of a tropical tipple.

One of my favorite classic tiki drinks EVER is the Saturn. I love Gin. I love passionfruit. I love lemon. I love almond. And this drink brings all of these flavors together brilliantly!

The Saturn was created in 1967 by J. “Popo” Galsini, who introduced this tipple to the world when he helped the American team take first place at the International Bartender’s Association World Championship that same year. It’s one of only a few tiki drinks made with Gin instead of Rum, and one of the most notable to emerge from the tiki bar heyday.

The Saturn is traditionally made by flash blending all ingredients with crushed ice, but feel free to serve it up or over ice without blending (crushed or pebble is best). It’s a year-round favorite of mine, which for the record tastes just as delicious cozied up in front of a fire as it does while sipping poolside. 😀
