A delicious and refreshing drink, the French Blonde cocktail offers the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Made with Gin, Lillet Blanc, Elderflower Liqueur, and citrus, this elegant cocktail makes for a tasty sip all year long.
Last week my friend, Cheryl, mentioned how much she loves a French Blonde cocktail and it dawned on me that I had never actually made this drink myself!
Which is a darn shame because I love, love, loooooove absolutely everything about it. It’s light. It’s fresh. It’s pretty. And it has the BEST flavor. Which makes me mad at myself for missing out on enjoying this deliciousness at home for far too long!
Plus, now that it’s rumored to have taken over Vodka and Diet Coke as Taylor Swift’s favorite cocktail, I obviously had to join the cool club, too. 😉
So please allow me to introduce you to my latest obsession and one of my new favorite cocktail recipes: the French Blonde. In this tipple, the botanical notes of Gin and the floral flavors of Elderflower Liqueur intertwine with the subtle sweetness of Lillet Blanc to create THE perfect drink.
This delicious cocktail is the ultimate companion for sunny days by the pool, Sunday brunch, girls’ night, or whenever you simply fancy a touch of sophistication in your glass!
The French Blonde Cocktail: What Is It?
The classic French Blonde cocktail is an alcoholic drink that brings together Gin, Lillet Blanc, Elderflower Liqueur, grapefruit juice, and lemon bitters.
What does a French Blonde Cocktail taste like?
The French Blonde is known for its delicate balance between sweetness and tartness and its combination of herbal, floral, and citrus flavors. While the juniper notes of Gin add herbal depth, Lillet and Elderflower bring subtle sweetness and florality, all of which are balanced by the tartness of grapefruit juice and bitters.
Simply put, the French Blonde is a refreshing cocktail that’s not overly sweet, has a refreshing citrus punch, and finishes with a subtle floral complexity.
French Blonde vs French 75
While both the French Blonde and the French 75 share French connections, they offer very different drinking experiences.
The French 75 is a crisp, dry cocktail that combines Gin, lemon juice, simple syrup, and sparkling wine. Gin is the prominent component, which gives the French 75 a strong bite and a bold flavor profile with the sparkling wine adding an effervescent finish.
In the French Blonde, however, Gin takes a backseat to Lillet. This coupled with the addition of Elderflower Liqueur and citrus yields a slightly sweeter and more delicate flavor profile.
Personally, I wouldn’t shake a stick at either one (as we say here in the South)! I love them both, but typically opt for a French 75 when I’m in the mood for a punchier cocktail and a French Blonde when I want a more easy-drinking sip.
French Blonde Cocktail History
The history of the French Blonde Cocktail with Gin is a bit murky, and there are a few different stories swirling around about who created it.
One story about the French Blonde’s origin is that it was created in the 1920s by a Parisian bartender. The bartender is said to have been inspired by the popular Gin and lemon cocktail known as the French 75 and wanted to create a cocktail that was similar but a bit more feminine. He gave his new creation the retro name “French Blonde” because its golden color resembled the blonde hair of a French woman.
Another story about the history of the French Blonde cocktail is that in the 1950s, a professional bartender in New York City created the original recipe. He, too, was inspired by the popularity of the French 75 but wanted to add a modern twist to it. His addition of Elderflower Liqueur gave it a delicate floral flavor, and the new cocktail became an instant hit in the Big Apple before eventually spreading to other parts of the world.
Although there’s no clear documentation of who created this drink and when, most agree that it emerged for the first time as a contemporary twist on a classic cocktail recipe, drawing inspiration from French flavors and sophistication.

While the classic recipe calls for Lillet Blanc, you can certainly experiment with Lillet Rosé and Lillet Rouge as well!
- ELDERFLOWER LIQUEUR: Elderflower Liqueur adds a beautiful floral element to the French Blonde cocktail and beautifully complements the tart balance of the grapefruit juice. St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur is my favorite, but Drillaud Elderflower Liqueur is another readily available option.
- GRAPEFRUIT JUICE: Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice infuses this cocktail with vibrant citrus flavors and a refreshing tang. I prefer mine with ruby red or pink grapefruit juice (which has been dubbed the “Redheaded French Blonde Cocktail” due to its beautiful pink color), but you can use whatever juice suits your fancy!
- LEMON BITTERS: A dash of lemon bitters is an essential component in the French Blonde cocktail as its citrusy, slightly bitter notes help to round out the other flavors.

For smaller batches, a reliable hand juicer or a 2-in-1 citrus juicer is ideal, while an electric citrus juicer becomes invaluable for larger gatherings, making the juicing process a breeze.
- STRAINER: To achieve a perfectly smooth cocktail, I recommend double straining it through both a Hawthorne strainer and a fine-mesh sieve.
