And for the last few years, I’ve had the privilege of calling St. Simons my home, which has truly been one of my life’s greatest blessings!

As someone who loves history, exploring St. Simons Island’s past has been one of the most rewarding parts of my time here. From colonial-era landmarks to places honoring the island’s Gullah-Geechee heritage, these sites offer a glimpse into the people and events that shaped this coastal community.
In this section, I’ve handpicked 11 historic sites and cultural experiences that I think are especially meaningful. Each one tells a piece of the island’s story and shows how St. Simons’ past continues to influence its present.
1. Climb to the Top of the Lighthouse
For anyone traveling through the Golden Isles of Georgia, a visit to the St. Simons Island Lighthouse should be at the top of your list! It’s the first place I take anyone new to the island because it offers the perfect mix of history, incredible views, and a chance to connect with St. Simons’ maritime past.
Start your visit at the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum and Keeper’s Dwelling, where interactive exhibits, rare artifacts, and archival photos bring the history of this working lighthouse to life and tell the story of its role during World War II. Then, climb the 129 steps to the top for sweeping, panoramic views of St. Simons and its picturesque coastline. On a clear day, you can even see beautiful Jekyll Island and the Sidney Lanier Bridge in the distance!
An iconic landmark on the Georgia coast since 1872, this lighthouse is more than just a landmark to me. My grandfather would bring me here as a child, sharing stories about his life as a Navy pilot and explaining the importance of lighthouses during wartime. Every visit reminds me of those moments, and I hope your visit creates lasting memories for you, too.
The St. Simons Lighthouse Museum is open year-round, except for major holidays and during inclement weather. Hours are Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with tickets available until 4:30 pm each day. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for kids 6-12, and free for children under 6. Military members receive a $2 discount with ID, and Coastal Georgia Historical Society members are admitted for free.
2. Travel Back in Time at Fort Frederica
For a glimpse into the island’s earliest days, a visit to Fort Frederica National Monument is an absolute must. One of the most popular things to do in St. Simons Island, this well-preserved historic site (now protected by the National Park Service) takes you back to 1736 when James Oglethorpe built the fort to defend the British colony’s southern border from Spanish threats.
As you wander through the ruins of Fort Frederica, it’s easy to imagine what life was like for British soldiers and settlers in the 18th century at this military outpost. The remains of the barracks, defensive walls, and town give a glimpse into the daily lives of British soldiers and settlers, while the surrounding marshland and towering moss-draped oaks add to the reflective atmosphere, making the site feel almost frozen in time.

3. Visit the Battle of the Bloody Marsh Site

The Battle of the Bloody Marsh took place on July 7, 1742, marking a decisive moment in Georgia’s colonial history. During the War of Jenkins’ Ear, Spanish forces attempted to invade Georgia but were met head-on by British troops led by James Oglethorpe, who thwarted their plans and forced them to retreat. This British victory ended Spanish claims to the Georgia territory once and for all and cemented the colony’s future under British rule.

Experience the enduring spirit of the African American community by attending a service at the historic First African Baptist Church.
Built by slaves from plantations across St. Simons, First African Baptist Church is one of the island’s most culturally significant landmarks. Every Sunday, church members traveled on foot from all corners of the 12-mile-long island to worship and build community — a remarkable testament to their faith and determination.
Originally established in 1859 in a small tabby cement structure near West Point Plantation, the church moved to its current location in 1869 after construction was completed. Today, it stands as a powerful reminder of the resilience of those who built it and the generations who have kept its traditions and rich history alive.
Although there are no tours offered, worship services are held on Sundays at 11:00 am.
6. Learn About The Island’s Wartime Contributions at the World War II Museum
Discover the fascinating history of coastal Georgia and its role in World War II at the World War II Home Front Museum.
Located in the Historic Coast Guard Station at East Beach, this interactive museum brings history to life with colorful exhibits of rare artifacts and audiovisual displays that highlight life on the home front during wartime.
Visitors can learn about food rations, blackouts, and the daily sacrifices faced by civilians, explore the efforts of women and minorities during the war, and even try their hand at spotting enemy planes or directing fighter pilots.
The museum also highlights Glynn County’s three critical wartime facilities: a Liberty shipyard, an airship base, and a radar training school, showing just how close to home the war effort came.
The museum welcomes visitors year-round, except on major holidays. Hours are Monday to Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sundays from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm, with tickets available until 4:30 pm. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for children ages 6 to 12, and free for kids under 6. Active-duty military personnel receive a $2 discount with a valid ID, and members of the Coastal Georgia Historical Society enjoy free entry.
7. Learn About the Educational Impact of Segregation at the Harrington School
Step back in time at the Historic Harrington School, a one-room schoolhouse that was vital to the education of St. Simons Island’s Black community during segregation.
Built in 1921, the Harrington School served grades 1–7 for three local Black communities, providing a rare opportunity for education at a time when segregation severely limited access. Although the school closed after desegregation in the 1960s, it has been carefully restored and now serves as an important cultural center dedicated to preserving and celebrating the legacy of the Gullah-Geechee culture on the island. This is one of the lesser-known things to do in St. Simons Island, but worth stopping in to see.
Tours of the Historic Harrington School are available Tuesday through Friday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
8. Walk Where the Wesleys Walked at Christ Church Frederica
With nearly three centuries of history and a stunning natural setting, Christ Church Frederica is one of St. Simons Island’s most cherished landmarks.
One of the oldest churches in Georgia, worship services have been held here continuously since 1736. It’s also an important site in Methodist history, as John and Charles Wesley preached on these grounds before returning to England to establish the Methodist Church. The adjacent cemetery adds to the historic atmosphere, serving as the final resting place for many notable figures. If you look closely, you might even spot the island’s oldest tombstone, dating back to 1803.
Nestled among cedar trees, holly bushes, and breathtaking live oaks, Christ Church sits in what I consider one of the most picturesque parts of St. Simons. It’s no wonder this beautiful spot is one of the most photographed locations on the island!
Christ Church holds worship services in its historic Frederica chapel on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am, and 11:15 am, with live streaming available for the 9:15 service. The church is open to visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and the cemetery grounds are open on the same days from sunrise to sunset.
9. Tour the Hamilton Plantation Slave Cabins
The Hamilton Plantation Slave Cabins stand as a solemn reminder of the lasting impact of slavery in the Southern United States.
Built in the early 1800s, these tabby cabins once housed enslaved workers who labored on the Hamilton Plantation during the antebellum era. Now restored and preserved by the Cassina Garden Club, they offer a glimpse into the harsh and cramped living conditions of those forced to work the land. Visiting these cabins provides an opportunity to reflect on this difficult chapter in history and honor the lives, struggles, and resilience of those who weathered extraordinary hardships.
Free public tours of the cabins are offered on Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Private tours can also be arranged for $5 per adult by calling (404) 374-3933.
10. Stand on Sacred Ground at Ebo Landing
Ebo Landing is a place of profound historical and cultural significance, where visitors can reflect on one of the most powerful acts of resistance against slavery in American history.
In 1803, 75 enslaved Africans from Igboland (present-day Nigeria) were brought to this site after being sold into slavery. Refusing to accept a life of bondage, they bravely revolted against their captors. In a remarkable act of defiance, they walked together into Dunbar Creek and drowned themselves, choosing death over enslavement. This extraordinary event became a symbol of resistance and an inspiration for the anti-slavery movement in the Western world.
Visiting Ebo Landing offers a space to honor the resilience, strength, and humanity of those who stood against oppression. It’s a deeply moving experience that provides insight into the struggles of the past and helps foster a greater understanding of the island’s culture today.
11. Learn About Georgia’s Rice Coast at the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation
Learn about the history of rice cultivation in coastal Georgia at the Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation.
Once a thriving rice plantation carved from the Lowcountry marshes by enslaved laborers in the 1800s, the Hofwyl-Broadfield property was later converted into a dairy farm by its owners. The property remained in the same family for five generations before being donated to the state of Georgia to preserve its legacy.
Today, the site is one of the last surviving links to Georgia’s “rice coast.” Visitors can explore a museum showcasing the plantation’s history and take a guided tour of the antebellum home. The tour provides a closer look at original heirlooms and furnishings while offering insight into the challenges of rice cultivation and the essential role enslaved laborers played in the plantation’s success.
The Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation State Historic Site is open Tuesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hourly plantation tours are available throughout the day, with the last tour beginning at 4:00 p.m. Admission is $8.75 for adults (18–61), $6.50 for seniors (62+), $5.50 for youth (6–17), and $2.25 for children under 6.

Things To Do In St. Simons Island: Beaches
When people think of St. Simons Island, its beautiful beaches are often the first thing that comes to mind — and for good reason! With some of the most picturesque stretches of coastline in the southeastern United States, the beaches of St. Simons cannot be missed.
But don’t expect white sand and crystal-clear water like you might find in other East Coast beach towns. St. Simons’ beaches are what I call “rustically beautiful,” with unique features that set them apart.
Windswept sand dunes frame the shoreline, creating a natural barrier against erosion and providing a habitat for coastal plants and wildlife. (Though storms like Hurricane Ian and Hurricane Helene washed away large portions of the dunes, the beaches remain as scenic as ever.) The sand here is also hard-packed due to the tides, creating a different texture between your toes than you might expect. But perhaps the most notable difference about St. Simons’ beaches is the water. Unlike the turquoise waves you might envision, it’s actually an earthy shade of brown due to the tannins, sediment, and microscopic plant and animal life carried by nearby rivers that empty into the Atlantic.
To me, these distinctive features are what make St. Simons’ beaches special. They offer a sense of unspoiled, natural beauty that’s hard to find elsewhere, making time by the shore one of the best things to do in St. Simons Island. To help you plan your beach day, here are four of my top recommendations.
12. Enjoy a Beach Day at Coast Guard Station Beach
The most popular beach on the island — and my personal favorite — is Coast Guard Station Beach, named after the historic Coast Guard station that sits at its entrance. (While locals often call this area “East Beach,” technically East Beach refers to the island’s entire coastline, not just this section.)
Coast Guard Station Beach is a dream for beachgoers. At low tide, the wide stretch of sand offers plenty of room for towels, chairs, and umbrellas — even on busy holidays or weekends, you’re likely to find a great spot. Just be sure to check the tide schedule before heading out – at high tide, there’s significantly less space to spread out!
For those looking to stay active, this beach is also a hotspot for water sports and fishing. You’ll often see anglers casting their lines at the water’s edge, alongside others surfing, boogie boarding, kite sailing, or simply splashing around in the waves.
And if you’re chasing a picture-perfect sunrise, Coast Guard Station Beach is the place to be. It’s my all-time favorite spot to watch the sun peek up over the horizon, and even on cloudy mornings, the skies here will take your breath away!
13. Plan a Picnic at Massengale Park
Massengale Park is another fantastic spot for a day of beach fun. This stretch of beach sits between the Coast Guard Station beach and the King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort, offering direct beach access from the parking lot. While it’s just as beautiful and relaxing as any other part of East Beach, what sets Massengale Park apart are its amenities.
With a fun playground for kids, shaded picnic areas with community grills, and plenty of picnic tables, Massengale Park is an ideal spot for families. Growing up, this was my family’s go-to beach access point because we not only loved having picnics under the trees, but the shade provided a welcome reprieve from the blazing hot sun!
14. Watch the Sunset at the Pier
The stretch of East Beach near the pier and Pier Village is perfect for beachgoers who appreciate a good scenic walk. As you stroll along the water’s edge, you’ll pass gorgeous seaside vacation homes, catch a glimpse of the iconic St. Simons Island Lighthouse, and even spot Jekyll Island in the distance.
And if you time it right, watching the sunset from this beach is an experience not to be missed! Just be sure to check the tide times as beach access here is only available during low and mid-tide.
15. Look for Sand Dollars and Walk on Water at Gould’s Inlet
For beachcombers, Gould’s Inlet is a perfect location to hunt for treasures along the shore.
Although it’s the tiniest section of East Beach, this quiet inlet at the northern end is one of the best spots for finding beautiful shells and sand dollars. Plus, at low tide, a sprawling sandbar stretches far into the water, and walking out onto it is almost like walking on water! Which I think makes it one of the most unique things to do in St. Simons Island.
Important note: The sand dollar in this photo is alive and should not be collected! Live sand dollars are brown or pink in color, with thousands of tiny spines on their underside. They’re amazing to see and admire, but please do not disturb them! Instead, look for the sun-bleached white sand dollar “shells” that are abundant and ready to take home.

St. Simons Island is an outdoor lover’s dream, with plenty of ways to enjoy its scenery and coastal landscapes. Whether you’re horseback riding along the beach or playing a round of golf at a top-rated course, there’s no shortage of activities to enjoy on solid ground.
Below, I’ve rounded up 11 of the best outdoor things to do in St. Simons Island by land. Each one is a great way to make the most of your time on this beautiful barrier island.
16. Book a Tee Time at a World-Class Golf Course
Practice your swing and soak in the island views at one of St. Simons’ prestigious golf courses. Golfing here is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after things to do in St. Simons Island!
Whether you’re hitting balls at the driving range, booking a private lesson, or playing a full 18 holes, the island offers options for every type of golfer looking to hit the greens. Choose from the Sea Island Golf Club’s three world-class courses (a favorite training ground for professional golfers), the Sea Palms Golf Course (offering the best bang for your buck), or the King and Prince Resort Golf Course (offering the best marsh views and wildlife sightings around!).
17. Search for Hidden Tree Spirits
Go on a scavenger hunt like no other as you search for the mysterious tree spirits of St. Simons Island.
Carved into the trunks of weathered oak trees by artist Keith Jennings and his son Devon, each tree spirit has a unique personality and expression. Legend has it the carvings immortalize sailors who once sailed aboard ships made of St. Simons oak, though Jennings himself says the faces reflect the soul of each tree.
Last Fall, my mom and I went hunting for these intricate and soulful faces, and it was such a fun and memorable adventure. This is easily one of the most unique things to do in St. Simons Island, but be warned — some of these carvings are definitely harder to spot than others!

Whether you prefer a beach ride, a tour of the historic Musgrove Plantation, or a trail ride through the woods of Frederica Township, The Stables at Frederica has options for every age and skill level. Kids ages 3-10 can enjoy pony rides at the stable, while lessons are available for anyone looking to improve their riding skills.
I still remember my first beach ride as a young girl! To this day, it’s one of my best childhood memories and one of my favorite things to do in St. Simons Island.
Beach and trail rides can accommodate up to 10 people at a time, with prices starting at $95 for marsh rides, $160 for beach and wooded rides, and $45 for pony rides. An additional 24% service charge is added to all rides.
19. Go Crabbing Or Fishing off the St. Simons Island Pier
Grab a pole or a net and some bait, and get ready for a day of fun with the locals that you won’t soon forget!
If there’s one thing about St. Simons that takes me right back to my childhood, it’s crabbing for blue crabs with my dad off the fishing pier. I can still picture us tying raw chicken to a net and waiting with that giddy anticipation for the first nibble. It’s one of those timeless activities that sticks with you long after you leave!
But what makes this one of my favorite things to do in St. Simons Island isn’t just the catch — it’s the community. Strolling up and down the pier, you’ll spot locals with their lines cast, buckets filled, and plenty of stories to tell. Most are happy to chat, share fishing tips, or let you take a peek at their haul. It’s a great way to experience the island’s laid-back vibe and pick up a little local wisdom while you’re at it.
This is an activity you can enjoy anytime, whether you’ve got 30 minutes to spare or an entire afternoon. If you visit the St. Simons Island Pier just once, though, I highly recommend going at sunset. Watching the sky change colors while the lighthouse begins to glow is a picture-perfect way to wrap up your day!
20. Take a Guided Trolley Tour
Discover St. Simons Island in true southern fashion aboard the St. Simons Trolley, where history, folklore, and humor are all part of the ride.
Led by the charismatic duo of Southern Belle Bunny and Kevin the King, this entertaining 90-minute tour covers 400 years of island history with fascinating stories, a sprinkle of folklore, and plenty of laughs. Covering 36 points of interest, it’s an entertaining and informative way to see the island from a new perspective.
The trolley tour departs once daily at 11:00 am. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 4–12, and free for kids under 4. Reservations are highly recommended as this is one of the most popular things to do in St. Simons Island, especially during peak season.

Home to over 300 bird species, this trail offers a front-row seat to watch birds thrive in their natural habitats. From the wetlands to the woodlands, salt marshes, and sandy shorelines, you’ll find an incredible variety of birdlife here.
The Colonial Coast Birding Trail consists of 18 sites in total, with four located in the Golden Isles. What you’ll spot depends on the season, the location, and even the tide, making each visit a unique experience. For the bird watchers in the group, this is definitely one of the best things to do in St. Simons Island!
26. Play a Round of Disc Golf at Gascoigne Bluff
Take a break and unwind at Gascoigne Bluff, a serene 24-acre greenspace with deep historical roots.

Just 15 minutes from St. Simons Island, Historic Downtown Brunswick is packed with history and Southern hospitality.
Take in the beautifully preserved Victorian-era architecture, relax in scenic parks and squares, and pop into local shops and galleries. The food scene here is worth the trip alone, with some of the area’s best restaurants serving everything from fresh seafood to classic Southern comfort dishes.
If you’re visiting on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, don’t miss the Farmer’s Market at Mary Ross Waterfront Park. Open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, it’s the perfect spot to pick up fresh produce, baked goods, and handmade items all while enjoying waterfront views.

For a peaceful end to your day, head to Epworth by the Sea and watch the sunset from the waterfront gazebo.
This tranquil Methodist retreat sits nestled amidst lush foliage and towering oak trees, offering a beautiful view of the river and the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. It’s a wonderful place for anyone seeking quiet moments of reflection or simply a chance to recharge. For me, it’s where I love to go when I just want to sit and “be.”
If you’re interested in photography, you’ll definitely want to add Epworth by the Sea to your list of things to do in St. Simons Island. There’s a gorgeous grove of live oak trees on the property just begging to be photographed, and the sweetest little Lovely Lane Chapel (where my parents were married) that you’ll definitely want to photograph, too!
34. Stroll Through the Avenue of the Oaks
Experience the beauty of the awe-inspiring Avenue of the Oaks.
Once part of a historic cotton plantation and now the grand entrance to the Sea Island Golf Club, this beautiful stretch of road is lined with live oak trees that have stood tall for more than 160 years. It’s a must-see at any time of the day, but especially during the golden hour when the Spanish Moss comes alive with a warm, shimmering glow.
While parking can be a bit tricky due to the active golf course that surrounds it, it’s well worth the effort. Particularly for anyone like me who’s obsessed with the island’s magnificent live oaks!
35. Tour the Wesley Memorial Gardens
Enjoy a self-guided stroll through the peaceful Wesley Memorial Gardens, named after Methodist Church founders John and Charles Wesley, to commemorate their evangelical efforts in Georgia.
This two-acre garden is filled with native plants, trees, and beautiful flowers, including more than 4,000 azaleas that are breathtaking when in bloom! At its center, you’ll find an 18-foot Celtic cross surrounded by benches, offering a tranquil spot for reflection, meditation, prayer, or simply connecting with nature.
The Gardens are free to the public and open during daylight hours.

I recently visited St. Simons Island and had a great time! We went to one of the beautiful beaches, had a meal at Gnats (very enjoyable seafood), went on a scavenger hunt looking for the tree spirits, and visited the downtown area that is on the move. We saw the touching memorial for the soldiers and had the most delicious meal at Mr. Shucks, don’t miss your stop there! Now after reading this things to-do list, I see I have many more things to do!
