Last year was a total bust for my grapefruit tree — I didn’t get a single piece of fruit from it. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to get a tiny but mighty harvest this year! It took them a while to ripen thanks to the crazy cold winter we had on St. Simons Island, but boy, were they worth the wait. And one of the first drinks I whipped up with some freshly squeezed grapefruit juice is this Brown Derby cocktail!
I’ve eaten most of my grapefruits straight off the tree (I mean, is there really anything better?), but I made sure to set aside a few for some delicious cocktails. But with my limited supply of grapefruits, I was intent on only mixing drinks that made my precious fruit the star of the show. And this Brown Derby cocktail recipe does just that.
Crafted with Bourbon, grapefruit juice, and honey syrup, this 3 ingredient cocktail is the epitome of simplicity and refreshment. What is a Brown Derby Cocktail?
The Brown Derby cocktail is a refreshing and deceptively simple-to-make classic cocktail that packs a flavor punch. This elegant, three-ingredient drink brings together Bourbon, grapefruit juice, and honey syrup for a citrus-forward sip that strikes the perfect balance between sweet and tart.
But this Whiskey and grapefruit juice concoction is more than just a tasty drink! The Brown Derby carries with it a slice of history that connects us to Hollywood’s Golden Age and a bygone era of glamor.
Brown Derby Cocktail History
As detailed in cocktail legend Dale DeGroff’s book, The Craft of the Cocktail, the Brown Derby was created in the 1930s at the Vendôme Club on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Owned by the founder of the Hollywood Reporter Billy Wilkerson, the Vendôme was one of the first celebrity-driven hotspots on the Sunset Strip. But despite being created there, this drink was named after the nearby Brown Derby restaurant, which was not only an eatery but a social hub for Hollywood’s elite.
Although it later became a chain of restaurants, the original Brown Derby, which opened in 1926 on Wilshire Boulevard, was a popular haunt for Hollywood stars in the 1930s and 40s. The very shape of it, designed to resemble a brown derby hat, mirrored the creative spirit of the industry it served.
Legends like Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich, and Shirley Temple were rumored to be regulars, and legend has it that Clark Gable proposed to Carole Lombard there. It was within these walls amid the buzz of star-studded conversations and clinking glasses that the Brown Derby cocktail found its audience.
While the exact link between the Vendôme Club and the name of the cocktail remains unclear, the Brown Derby is forever etched in Hollywood lore. So much so that it even made a cameo in the 1940 film “Kitty Foyle” and earned literary mentions in the works of authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald and Charles Bukowski.
A Drink By A Different Name
Although the Brown Derby cocktail is believed to have been created at the Vendome Club and the recipe was published in cocktail books such as George Buzza Jr.’s 1933, Hollywood Cocktails, the same recipe was published as the “De Rigueur cocktail” in renowned British bartender Harry Craddock’s 1930 classic, The Savoy Cocktail Book.
So needless to say, there’s debate about the cocktail’s origins and whether the same grapefruit Bourbon cocktail was created in two different places or whether the recipe was stolen from Craddock and given another name. Nobody knows for sure, but the Brown Derby is the name that stuck!

What is in a Brown Derby Cocktail?
The classic Brown Derby cocktail recipe requires just a few simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need to recreate this taste of Hollywood history:
- BOURBON: Any Bourbon will work in this drink, so choose one that you like!
- GRAPEFRUIT JUICE: For the best flavor, use freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice. Fresh is always best!
- HONEY SYRUP: You need a touch of sweet honey syrup to balance the tartness of the grapefruit juice. You can find it pre-made at most grocery stores, or you can easily make your own
- GARNISH: While not totally necessary, a grapefruit twist, orange peel, or a Luxardo maraschino cherry can add a touch of elegance to your Brown Derby. Personally, I’m a big fan of garnishes and like to serve this tipple with a grapefruit peel.
Honey Syrup
If you don’t have honey syrup on hand, it’s super easy to make your own with any type of honey. Simply combine equal parts honey and water in a saucepan over medium heat (like you would with a classic simple syrup recipe). Stir until the honey dissolves and then remove it from heat and allow it to cool completely before using.
If you want a sweeter syrup, use a ratio of one cup of honey to ½ cup of water for a rich honey syrup.
Honey syrup is often used instead of honey in cocktails because it’s a bit less sweet and combines more easily when shaken together with other ingredients.
How to Make a Brown Derby Cocktail
This citrusy cocktail is as easy to make as it is delicious! Here’s how to do it:
- CHILL YOUR GLASS: Either fill your cocktail glass with ice or place it in the freezer for a few minutes to get cold. While not a mandatory step, doing so will keep your drink fresher and colder for longer!
- MIX AND SHAKE: Combine Bourbon, freshly squeezed grapefruit juice, and honey syrup in a cocktail shaker and add ice. Shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds or until the shaker tin feels icy cold.
- STRAIN AND GARNISH: Double strain the mixture through a fine mesh sieve into your chilled cocktail glass (my preference for this drink is a chilled coupe glass) and garnish. If using a citrus twist, first express the oils over the drink before placing it in the glass.
Brown Derby Cocktail Variations
While the classic Brown Derby recipe is perfect as is, here are a few ways to tweak it if you want to experiment with different flavor combinations:
- BOURBON TWISTS: Try out different types of Bourbon like Rye Whiskey for a touch of spice or a wheated Bourbon for a smoother taste profile. Irish Whiskey works great as well.
