My first memory of the Grasshopper cocktail goes all the way back to childhood. One Christmas Eve, I eyed my parents sipping a bright green drink in delicate little glasses. When I asked what it was, my dad grinned and said, “It’s a Grasshopper.”
I was completely horrified! As a little girl, I literally thought they were drinking bugs, which still makes me giggle whenever I think about it.
Fast-forward a few decades, and I’m now the one mixing Grasshopper cocktails. After years behind the bar and plenty of rounds served at dinner parties, it’s become one of my favorite after-dinner drinks. The mint-and-chocolate combo is always a hit, and its pretty green color makes it especially fun for Christmas, Halloween, or St. Patrick’s Day.
But this Grasshopper cocktail recipe is too good to save just for special occasions. If you like dessert drinks, it’s just as good on a Tuesday night as it is after a holiday dinner.
What Is a Grasshopper Cocktail?
The Grasshopper is a classic cocktail known for its mint-chocolate flavor and eye-catching green color. Made with green crème de menthe, white crème de cacao, and cream, it’s most often served after dinner as a dessert cocktail. But over the years, I’ve poured plenty at parties and holiday gatherings, too.
It first became popular in the 1950s and ’60s, when sweet, creamy cocktails were all the rage. And while that mid-century trend may have come and gone, this retro green cocktail has made a major comeback in recent years thanks to its flavor, simplicity, and nostalgic appeal.
What Does a Grasshopper Drink Taste Like?
To me, a Grasshopper cocktail tastes like Andes Candies in liquid form. But if that doesn’t ring a bell, imagine a scoop of mint chocolate chip ice cream that’s just started to melt. Now pour that into a glass, add a boozy kick, and you’ve got yourself a Grasshopper drink!
Grasshopper Cocktail History
The exact origin of the Grasshopper cocktail is a bit of a mystery – who created it and where depends on who you ask.
The most widely accepted story credits Philibert Guichet, owner of the historic New Orleans bar and restaurant Tujague’s, with creating it for a 1918 cocktail competition in New York City. He reportedly took second place, though that part of the story has never been confirmed.
Adding to the confusion, an even earlier reference shows up in William Boothby’s 1907 cocktail book World Drinks and How to Mix Them, which includes a “Grasshopper” recipe made with just crème de menthe and crème de cacao. No cream or shaking, just a layered drink served straight.
Then there’s the Wisconsin/Minnesota angle. Several mid-century newspaper clippings credit old fashioned supper clubs in Milwaukee and Minneapolis with popularizing (or even inventing) the drink. Whether or not that’s true is hard to say, but having spent time in a few Wisconsin supper clubs myself, I can confirm it’s definitely part of the culture there.
Although most agree the Grasshopper was invented before Prohibition, that era likely stalled its early momentum. However, by the mid-century, it had found its place in American cocktail culture, and by the disco era, it was a mainstay on menus across the country.
Pro Tip: Choose the Right Glassware
The Grasshopper is pure mid-century nostalgia, so serve it like they did back then: in a classic coupe or Martini glass. Chill the glass first to keep the drink from warming up too fast.
Classic Grasshopper Cocktail Ingredients
To make this mint-chocolate classic, you only need three ingredients:
- GREEN CRÈME DE MENTHE: This is where this green Grasshopper drink gets both its color and mint flavor. Although white crème de menthe has a similar taste, go with the green version. Not just for tradition, but because that bright green color is what makes a Grasshopper a Grasshopper!
- WHITE CRÈME DE CACAO: Crème de cacao is the chocolate half of the equation. Use the white variety to keep the drink from looking muddy.
- HEAVY CREAM: Cream is what gives the Grasshopper its signature silky texture. You can use milk or half and half instead, but it won’t have the same creamy, dessert-like consistency.
- GARNISH (OPTIONAL): Although a traditional Grasshopper cocktail is usually served garnish-free, you can fancy it up in a number of ways. Try topping it with chocolate shavings or a sprinkle of nutmeg. Add a dollop of whipped cream or a fresh mint sprig. Or drizzle some chocolate sauce inside the glass first (I love Ghirardelli Chocolate Sauce for this) for extra chocolate oomph.

How to Make a Grasshopper Drink
Once you’ve got your ingredients, the rest is easy. This is a shake-and-strain cocktail, which means no blending, layering, or complicated mixology techniques required. Here’s how to make it:
- CHILL THE GLASS: Pre-chill a coupe glass or Martini glass. I usually pop mine in the freezer or fill it with ice and water while I prep the drink. Cream-based cocktails lose their structure as they warm up, so a cold glass makes a difference.
- COMBINE INGREDIENTS: Using a jigger to measure, add 1 ounce green crème de menthe, 1 ounce white crème de cacao, and 2 ounces heavy cream to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. (The original Grasshopper drink recipe calls for equal parts of each, but I find the mint too overpowering using those specs.)
- SHAKE: Cream takes a little extra effort to incorporate, so give the cocktail shaker a firm, steady shake for a full 30 seconds. You’re not just mixing, you’re chilling and aerating the drink to get the texture just right.
- STRAIN AND GARNISH: Once it’s well shaken, double-strain into your chilled cocktail glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer. This keeps out any ice shards or cream clumps, leaving you with a smooth, creamy pour. Garnish if you like.
Pro Tip: Shake Creamy Cocktails Longer
Cream cocktails need more than a quick shake. If you cut it short, the texture can fall flat, and the cream may separate in the glass. A full 30 seconds of shaking not only chills the drink but whips in just enough air to make it light and silky. The shaker will start to frost, and the sound of the ice will soften when it’s ready.
Grasshopper Cocktail Variations
Over the years, I’ve seen (and served) more than a few creative takes on the classic Grasshopper recipe, especially at dinner parties where someone always wants to “try a twist.” Here are a few ways to riff on the original:
- GRASSHOPPER COCKTAIL WITH BAILEYS: Swap half (or all) of the cream for Baileys Irish Cream. It adds subtle notes of toffee and vanilla, and is especially popular around the holidays.
- FLYING GRASSHOPPER COCKTAIL: This variation is simply a Grasshopper cocktail with Vodka. Vodka replaces the cream, making the drink lighter in texture, but quite a bit boozier!
- GRASSHOPPER DRINK WITH ICE CREAM: Forget the shaker and blend it instead. Use a scoop (or 5 😆) of vanilla or mint chocolate chip ice cream in place of the cream, then blend until smooth and creamy. I watched a frozen Grasshopper being made at HOBNOB in Wisconsin, where the bartender piled scoops of ice cream into the glass like it was a sundae. It was the most over-the-top Grasshopper I’d ever seen — pure supper club fun!
- GRASSHOPPER COCKTAIL WITHOUT CREAM: Skip the dairy altogether and go old school with just crème de menthe and crème de cacao, served over ice or layered in a pousse-café style. Or sub in coconut milk or almond for a dairy-free version.
- NON-ALCOHOLIC GRASSHOPPER DRINK: To make a virgin Grasshopper cocktail, try combining mint syrup (like Torani’s crème de menthe), chocolate sauce, and cream. Your ratios will depend on the ingredients, so you’ll have to experiment a little. And with a strong flavor like mint, I always recommend starting small and adding more if needed.
When to Serve a Grasshopper Cocktail
This mint-chocolate drink makes an ideal after dinner cocktail, especially when you’re not in the mood for dessert but still want a little something sweet. Its bright green color also makes it a fun pick for holidays. Serve it at Halloween for something spooky, at Christmas for a splash of color, or on St. Patrick’s Day when green cocktails are basically required.

Ingredients
- 1 ounce green crème de menthe
- 1 ounce white crème de cacao
- 2 ounces heavy cream
- Garnish: chocolate shavings, nutmeg, whipped cream, or mint sprig (optional)
Instructions
- Pre-chill a cocktail glass by placing it in the freezer or filling it with ice water.
- Add 1 ounce green crème de menthe, 1 ounce white crème de cacao, and 2 ounces heavy cream to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
- Shake vigorously for 30 full seconds to chill and properly aerate the cream.
- Double strain into your chilled glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer and garnish if desired.

I don’t understand why you are straining it?
Great question! Traditionally, a Grasshopper is served up in a coupe or Martini glass, so you strain it to separate it from the ice. However, you can certainly enjoy this drink over ice if you prefer, in which case you would just pour everything from the shaker into a rocks glass and enjoy!

I always liked anything mint and chocolate. I remember grasshopper pies being especially popular in the ’80s: great for me!
My suggestion for those of us watching our sugar is to use vodka with mint and chocolate extracts with whatever sweetener we like. Liquid allulose works well.
