What I love most about this drink is that it’s easy to make, full of flavor, and works for just about any occasion. But it’s especially perfect during the holiday season when cranberries are everywhere and you want to make a festive cocktail that feels extra special without trying too hard!
Does Gin and Cranberry Juice Go Together?
Absolutely! Cranberry juice and Gin are a fantastic pairing (in my humble opinion). The botanicals in Gin, especially those with juniper, citrus, or herbal notes, really complement the tartness of cranberry juice, and together they create a balanced drink that’s refreshing and flavorful without being overly sweet.
Where Was Gin and Tonic Invented?
The Gin and Tonic was created in the 19th century, born out of necessity rather than indulgence. Back then, quinine — a key ingredient in tonic water — was used to ward off malaria. The problem? It tasted awful on its own. To make it more palatable, British soldiers began mixing it with Gin. And just like that, a classic was born!
What began as a medicinal remedy didn’t take long to evolve into a drink enjoyed far beyond its original purpose. Today, the Gin and Tonic serves as a great canvas for countless variations, with seasonal ingredients like cranberries offering fresh ways to reimagine the original.

To make a Cranberry or Cranberry Sauce Gin and Tonic you just need a few simple ingredients. Here’s what it calls for:
- GIN: A good quality Gin is the foundation of this cocktail. Its botanicals add character, so pick one you like because you’re gonna taste it!
- TONIC WATER: I think classic tonic water gives this drink the best flavor – it’s got the right balance of bitterness and fizz to keep the drink refreshing.
- CRANBERRY JUICE OR CRANBERRY SAUCE: This is where the tartness and that gorgeous ruby-red color come from. Cranberry juice is the easiest option, but stirring in a spoonful of holiday cranberry sauce is my favorite way to make it! If you’re using juice, I recommend pure cranberry juice to keep the tart cranberry flavor front and center — sweet juice can throw off the balance.
- CITRUS JUICE: If you’re making a Cranberry Sauce Gin and Tonic, you probably won’t need to add any extra citrus (especially if you’re using a cranberry sauce recipe like my sister’s that already has lemon juice in it). But if you’re using cranberry juice, particularly a sweetened one, a splash of orange or lime juice can help cut through the sweetness and bring the drink into balance.
- SIMPLE SYRUP (OPTIONAL): I usually skip the extra sweetness since tonic water already has enough for me. But if you’ve got a sweet tooth, you can add a splash of agave syrup or simple syrup (or better yet, the homemade cranberry syrup I make in this cocktail recipe!) for a little extra depth.
- GARNISH IDEAS: Little details like the right garnish can turn a good drink into a great one! A sprig of fresh rosemary or thyme, an orange slice, or a few fresh whole cranberries (or sugared cranberries) are my personal favorites for this Cranberry Gin and Tonic.
What Gin Goes with Cranberry Juice?
In my opinion, the Gin you choose can absolutely make or break this Cranberry Gin Tonic! I recommend going with one that has bold botanical notes, like The Botanist or Monkey 47, as they pair beautifully with the tart cranberry flavors. If you prefer something more straightforward, a London Dry classic Gin like Tanqueray or Beefeater is a great choice for that clean, classic flavor.
If you want to pump up the flavor a bit, you could also try a dry Gin with citrus notes like Hendrick’s or a floral Gin like Bombay Sapphire. These add a bit of complexity without completely overpowering the drink.
On the flip side, I’d steer clear of overly spiced or sweetened Gins. They tend to clash with the cranberry’s tartness and the bitter flavor of tonic, which defeats the whole point of the cocktail. The goal here is to complement the cranberry and tonic flavors, not compete with them! So experiment with different Gins until you find the best Gin and Tonic with cranberry juice combo that works for you.

Making a festive Cranberry Gin and Tonic is quick, easy, and doesn’t require any prep time, fancy tools, or skills. Here’s how to put it all together:
- COMBINE INGREDIENTS. Use a jigger to measure 2 ounces of your favorite Gin and pour it into a rocks glass, highball glass, or large balloon glass. Add 1-2 ounces cranberry juice or a spoonful of cranberry sauce and stir to combine. Adjust the amount of cranberry juice or sauce depending on how tart you like your drink.
- ADD ICE AND TONIC WATER: Fill the glass with ice (crushed ice or ice cubes, whichever you prefer), then pour in about 2-3 ounces of tonic water. Go slow when adding the tonic to preserve its fizz.
- STIR: Use a long bar spoon to gently stir together the Gin and tonic and cranberry juice. Be careful not to overmix as you don’t want to lose the tonic’s effervescence.

- Fill the glass with ice.

- If opting for cranberry juice, look for 100% pure, unsweetened juice to keep the tart cranberry flavor front and center. However, if you can’t find unsweetened juice, add 1/4 oz of fresh lime juice to cut the sweetness if necessary.

I was searching for unique gin and tonic recipes and found this one. Since cranberries aren’t in season I tried it with cranberry juice and I liked it but I bet its even better with real cranberry sauce!
Oh man, I love cranberries so much and wish they were in season longer! Although cranberry juice is a great alternative when cranberries aren’t in season, I DO think this cocktail is better with real cranberry sauce only because of the fresh cranberries and all the spices that go in the sauce. 😋 You’ll have to try it again when Fall rolls around and let me know what you think!
