What Is Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey?
Described by Skrewball itself as “a little salty, a little sweet, a little savory, and always smooth,” Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is a 70-proof American-made flavored Whiskey infused with real peanuts.
With its creamy texture, rich nutty notes, and notable sweetness, Skrewball errs more on the sweet side than a typical Whiskey. It is particularly well-suited for creamy cocktail lovers and those who enjoy dessert-style drinks.
The Story Behind Skrewball Whiskey
Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is the brainchild of passionate husband and wife duo Steven and Brittany Yeng. This San Diego-based couple wanted to bring something unique to the world of spirits, so together they combined their talents to create the world’s first Peanut Butter Whiskey. However, the inspiration for this flavored Whiskey began long before the Yeng duo were ever entrepreneurs.
STEVEN’S HISTORY
Born in Cambodia, Steven suffered from Polio as a baby, which paralyzed him in one leg at the age of one. Desperate for quality healthcare, his family moved from Cambodia to Thailand in search of help. There they spent six years living in a refugee camp until miraculously receiving their American sponsorship from a couple in the United States.
That sponsorship brought Steven’s family to California in the 1990s, where they arrived extremely malnourished after subsisting primarily on bananas while living as refugees. Given their physical condition, the couple who sponsored the Yeng family began delivering baskets of food. These care packages always included bread and peanut butter, and because of this Steven fell in love with the American staple. Not only for its taste but because it represented freedom and a better life.
In 2008, Steven and his brother opened OB Noodle House, an Asian fusion restaurant in Ocean Beach. There, Steven used his love of peanut butter as inspiration for the cocktail program, creating a Whiskey and peanut butter cocktail using Jameson Irish Whiskey as the base. This drink quickly became wildly popular among his restaurant patrons, ultimately leading to the creation of Steven’s peanut butter Whiskey idea.
ENTER BRITTANY
Friends since elementary school and later turned spouses, Brittany teamed up with her husband to help turn his vision into a reality. With her expertise as both a lawyer and a chemist, Brittany used her skills to formulate this standalone spirit that could be sipped on its own as well as mixed into cocktails. And in 2018, the world’s first Peanut Butter Whiskey officially entered the marketplace.
Is Skrewball Actually Whiskey?
One question that often arises among spirits enthusiasts is whether Skrewball truly qualifies as Whiskey. And given its unique flavor profile, it’s natural to wonder about this classification.
According to the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB), for a spirit to be called a Whiskey it must be distilled from a fermented mash of grain (which can include grains like barley, corn, rye, or wheat) at less than 95% ABV, bottled at no less than 40% ABV, and aged in wooden barrels for a certain period to allow it to develop its distinct flavors and characteristics.
Although Skrewball is labeled as “Whiskey with natural flavors,” it actually only has an ABV of 35%. Therefore, it does not technically meet the TTB’s official Whiskey requirements even though it’s derived from grains commonly used in Whiskey production.
What Does Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey Taste Like?
Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey is a sweet, smooth Whiskey with a strong peanut butter flavor. However, to me, it tastes more like a liqueur than it does a Whiskey!
With strong notes of vanilla and caramel, it’s much sweeter than a typical Whiskey and has a more dessert-like flavor profile. So if you’re an avid Whisky connoisseur, this might not be the spirit for you!
What Is Good To Mix With Skrewball?
Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey offers a versatile flavor profile that can be complemented by various mixers. Although the White Russian is one of my favorite drinks in which to use it, here are some other popular choices that pair well with Skrewball:
- Cola (Did you ever drop salty peanuts into a can of Coke like I did growing up in Georgia?)
- Cream Soda or Club Soda
- Coffee and Coffee Liqueurs (Adding it to some cold brew makes for a super delicious drink!)
- Chocolate, hot chocolate, and Chocolate Liqueur
- Nutty Liqueurs such as Amaretto and Frangelico
- Irish Cream Liqueurs
- Fruit Liqueurs such as Chambord, Crème de Mûre, and Banana Liqueur
- Cream, milk, and ice cream
- Fruit juices such as cranberry juice, grape juice, orange juice, and apple cider
- Jams and jellies (Berry flavors are my favorite and make for a perfect drink!)
- Spirits such as Vodka, Whiskey, and Rum
Remember to experiment with different ratios and garnishes to find your preferred balance. Whether you enjoy Skrewball on the rocks, mixed with soda, or in a creatively crafted cocktail or jelly drink, the possibilities with Peanut Butter Whiskey as the main ingredient are endless!
Skrewball White Russian Recipe Ingredients
This White Russian with Skrewball is a delicious and easy-to-make cocktail that combines the smooth taste of Peanut Butter Whiskey with the rich flavor of Coffee Liqueur and the slight kick of Vodka.
To make a Skrewball White Russian, you need the following ingredients:
- Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey
- Coffee liqueur
- Vodka
- Heavy whipping cream
Personally, I don’t use any additional sweetener in this PB White Russian because I feel the Skrewball is plenty sweet on its own. However, feel free to add a bit of maple syrup, brown sugar syrup, or simple syrup if you prefer an extra-sugary cocktail!
How To Make This Skrewball White Russian Recipe
Creating the perfect PB Whiskey White Russian is simpler than you might think. Follow these easy steps to craft this delectable cocktail:
- First, pour 2 ounces of Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey into the bottom of an empty rocks glass.
- Next, add ½ ounce of Vodka and ½ ounce of Coffee Liqueur.
- Stir the three spirits together until well combined.
- After that, fill the glass with ice cubes and carefully top it with 1 ounce of heavy cream.
- Stir before drinking to thoroughly combine all of the ingredients.
- Top with more ice if necessary and then sip and enjoy!
HOW TO MIX A WHITE RUSSIAN
When it comes to mixing this Skrewball Whiskey White Russian recipe, there is some debate about whether to stir the cocktail or not. On one hand, stirring the cocktail is one of the best ways to distribute the flavors more evenly and create a consistent taste throughout. On the other hand, not stirring allows for visual contrast and the possibility of savoring the distinct layers as you sip. Ultimately, to stir or not to stir comes down to personal preference.
Equipment Needed For This Skrewball White Russian Recipe
In addition to a bottle of Peanut Butter Whiskey, you’ll need a few essential pieces of equipment to craft the perfect Peanut Butter Whiskey White Russian. These are the tools I’m currently using and loving:
- JIGGER: Accurate measurements are crucial to achieving the perfect balance of flavors in your cocktail. If you don’t have a jigger, a mini measuring cup works just as well.
- ROCKS GLASS: A sturdy rocks glass is essential for serving your Skrewball White Russian as its wide base allows room for ice and gives you space to mix and enjoy your cocktail. I like these dishwasher-friendly rocks glasses and the pretty design on this set of Whiskey glasses. (If you don’t have a rocks glass, feel free to strain your drink into a Martini glass or pour it over ice cubes in any cocktail glass of your choice.)
- BAR SPOON: A bar spoon comes in handy to help you gently stir your Skrewball White Russian while also allowing you to control the mixing process so you don’t dilute the drink too quickly.
- COCKTAIL SHAKER OR MIXING GLASS (OPTIONAL): While not necessary for this recipe, you can use a cocktail shaker or a mixing glass to mix your drink instead of layering it. Shaking it can help create a frothier texture while mixing it before straining can help to better incorporate the ingredients together.
Skrewball White Russian Recipe Substitutions And Variations
There are many ways to substitute or vary the ingredients in this Skrewball White Russian recipe to create a new and delicious drink. Here are some ideas for substitutions and variations to help you make your own Skrewball Whiskey cocktails:
- The rise in Skrewball’s popularity unsurprisingly led to other contenders in the Peanut Butter Whiskey category. Although Skrewball is my personal favorite, some other options include Skatterbrain, Sheep Dog, Bird Dog, Ole Smoky, and Sqrrl.
- While Kahlúa is typically my go-to Coffee Liqueur, other tasty options include Cafe Borghetti, Mr. Black, and Tia Maria.
- If you prefer a lighter Peanut Butter Whiskey cocktail, feel free to use milk or half and half instead of heavy whipping cream. And substituting almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or oat milk is a great way to make a dairy-free version as well. Just keep in mind that the texture and flavor of this Peanut Butter Whiskey drink will depend on what type of milk product you use.
- To add some extra pizzazz to your PB White Russian, add peanut butter to the rim of the glass and dip it in salt or espresso salt.
- For a cocktail that tastes more like peanut butter cups, add a spoonful of peanut butter and a squeeze of chocolate syrup to the mix.
- Swap the heavy cream for Baileys Irish Cream to make an extra indulgent dessert drink.
- Replace the Coffee Liqueur with some grape jelly or a splash of Raspberry Liqueur for a creamy peanut butter and jelly cocktail. This is like eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich while drinking a glass of cold milk!
